Kubo Kusina Belfast
Kubo Kusina is a philipina eatery that since their birth out of lockdown has become one of my favourite spots to go to. There have been several iterations of this small but mighty business from Filipina Canadian owner, Nallaine, with eat at home feasts, pop ups in various different locations in the form of their popular Kamayan nights, a stall in the short-lived Trade Market, and now to their first brick and mortar unit in the iconic Great Northern Mall ahead of its redevelopment into a new street food and retail market. The new location is small but this allows for a very personal experience and lives up to its name - Kubo meaning Small Hut.
Kubo’s Jolli Fried Chicken
From a gluten free perspective chef Nallaine is one of the most knowledgeable and passionate professionals, especially in Belfast, that I’ve ever met about making sure that their menu is as inclusive as is possible. The majority of Kubo’s menu is gluten free as standard as are most of their Kamayan supper clubs - although they will state if they can’t cater for gf and other allergens when releasing the menus due to the special nature of those dishes. Yes it is a shared kitchen but all gf items (did I mention that’s most items?) are cooked separately and they will happily answer any questions that you have. I been numerous times now as I slowly work through my friends and family to introduce them. I truly believe that Kubo is one of the safest spots in Belfast and whether we have just popped in or we have booked specially in to their supper clubs we have always loved our experience. A good reason to do book in to the supper clubs or Sunday Kamayans is that they will make specialty items like their Lumpia rolls gluten free which they cannot do for their daily menu due to the intricate nature of the hand made gluten free wrappers.
